an ode to friendship

to the friends i wish were more than memories

do you remember laughing at that joke i told?

you almost toppled right out of your chair.

do you remember playing on the tire swing,

acting like we were eagles in the air?



do you remember talking about life and death,

in your room, in the dark, on the floor?

do you remember telling me that i was fun —

something i’d never been called before?



do you remember leaping on your trampoline,

soaring so high that we both nearly fell out?

up there, it seemed like we could see the whole entire world,

but the view was never higher than your house.



all we did, all we said, i recall.

wish i knew if you remembered us at all.



do you remember walking down that long steep road?

one wrong step and we might tumble down the hill.

do you remember showing me that messed-up scene?

i tried erasing it but i recall it still.



do you remember all those things you said that brightened up my day,

even when you felt like jumping off a cliff?

when you told me that, i said to you that i would jump off too,

and you joked that we should howl as we did



all we did, all we said, wish i knew,

if it all still means anything to you.



do you remember when we were the best of friends?

those years were still some of the greatest of my life.

all i hope is you remember them as fondly as i do,

‘cause we never even got to say goodbye.

this piece is an ode to my many good friends i had when i went to private school years ago. all of the lines are based on real, fond memories i made with them. it’s strange to think that they’ve likely moved on and have new friends while i’m just stuck here thinking about the good times we had back then. sometimes i wonder if they even remember it.
